Professional Bull Riders - The morning line: Oklahoma City, Day 2

The morning line: Oklahoma City, Day 2

Highlights

  • Eleven out of 35 riders made the whistle last night, keeping the event open to virtually anyone.
  • World leader J.B. Mauney should notch a score in Round 2.
  • Oklahomans Cord McCoy and Ryan McConnel should both make 8 tonight, while Hulbert’s Ryan Dirteater is not as safe a bet.

OKLAHOMA CITY - With only 11 qualified rides last night, this event is still wide open.

J.B. Mauney on 73 The Jam:
The Jam is making his debut here. At the Touring Pro Division level, he's been ridden twice in five attempts, and what that means is he should not be enough bull to shake Mauney loose.

Chris Shivers on S40 Bad Moon:
This may be the marquee matchup of the night. Shivers was 89 on Bad Moon in Sacramento, Calif. Expect Shivers to get another score on him here. He's made a living on bulls like this for a long time now.

At the Touring Pro Division level, [The Jam has] been ridden twice in five attempts, and what that means is he should not be enough bull to shake Mauney loose.

Ryan McConnel on 153 Dr. Feel Good:
McConnel was 87.5 points on this bull at a Touring Pro event in Wimberly, Texas, last July. More recently, Dr. Feel Good carried Kasey Hayes to an 89.5-point score in Denver. He's another debut bull, but a good draw for McConnel.

Jory Markiss on 250 Black Pearl:
After seeing Black Pearl last week, I have to like any left-handed rider against him. The first jump or two are key on this bull, because he is well-known for trying to get a head start, and doesn't always leave the chute in an orderly fashion. After the first second or two, it should be smooth sailing for Markiss.

Cord McCoy on 129 Wild Cherry:
McCoy is in the lead right now, and the odds favor him over Wild Cherry. Three lefties have tried him at the Touring Pro level, and two of them got a score. Overall, riders are 3-for-8 on him, but he hasn't faced a lot of top-tier riders.

Ryan Dirteater claimed second place in Round 1 in Oklahoma City with 86 points on Hou's Little Man.

Rubens Barbosa on 78 Junior Bonner:
I like this matchup because I'm interested in seeing the bull. I haven't seen him before, and this is his Built Ford Tough Series debut. He has 15 career outs, mostly at rodeos, and is unridden. He's received a judge's marking 13 times (a couple of times the rider came off so quickly he wasn't scored) and 10 of his 13 bull scores have been 44 points or better. He's one of the highest-marked bulls around with no experience at this level.

Guilherme Marchi on 797 Express:
I would expect this bull to go to the right, because he's been ridden by three of four right-handed riders who have attempted him. Going to the right is not a good strategy against Marchi.

Luke Snyder on 563 Hee Bee Gee Bee:
This may be the best all-around draw in the round. Hee Bee Gee Bee is not the easiest bull to ride by any means, but almost everyone here is capable of riding him. He is very honest, has good timing, and if Luke can hold his own here, he should earn close to 88 points.  Hee Bee Gee Bee has zero tolerance for mistakes.

[Pretty Boy] was involved in the only incident I've ever heard of where a group of riders elected to have him removed from the draw after he was already at the event and drawn.

Silvano Alves on 5171 Pretty Boy:
Most PBR fans won't recognize this bull because he's only been to a couple of events late last season. Outside the PBR, this is one of the most notorious bulls in recent years. He's only been ridden twice in 30 career attempts, and was involved in the only incident I've ever heard of where a group of riders elected to have him removed from the draw after he was already at the event and drawn. He hasn't been tested by the top-level riders very often in his career, but he's about to be tested by the best rider there is.

Ryan Dirteater on 034 Say When:
In contrast to Pretty Boy, Say When is a certified dream-crushing machine. If you've followed the PBR for a while, you may remember famously difficult bulls like Pandora's Box, Jack Daniel's Happy Hour, Doctor Proctor, Scene of the Crash, Slingblade, and more recently, Smackdown.  They all have one thing in common: their record of prematurely ejecting the world's most talented riders is not as impressive as Say When's. Dirteater has a tough task here.

Valdiron de Oliveira on 67 Toy Soldier:
To put this in terms that Oklahomans will understand, this is like OU or OSU versus UCO in football. If Toy Soldier wins, it will be a huge upset. The most likely outcome is a lot of points for Oliveira.
