Last week, it was Priscila Palermo who challenged her husband to ride despite two broken ribs. Robson Palermo promptly went out and won the Chicago Invitational.
This week, it was Andrea de Oliveira who encouraged Valdiron de Oliveira to keep focusing on riding all of his bulls, and said that he would eventually win another Built Ford Tough Series event.
That win came Sunday night at the Glendale Invitational.
The top-ranked rider in the world standings went 4-for-4 to win at the Jobing.com Arena, extending his lead over the competition.
It’s the third week in a row in which the event winner – Palermo last week and Guilherme Marchi the week before in St. Louis – won for the second time in 2011.
Oliveira was ninth in the average after the first round with an 85.5-point ride on Cat Ballou, before moving to second in the average when he covered Bad Moon for 89.5 points in the first short round of the event on Saturday.
He momentarily moved to first in the average in Round 3, when he became the first rider to cover three bulls. Oliveira rode Red Hot for 87 points, but 10 outs later, two-time World Champion Chris Shivers regained the lead going into the championship round with an 88.75-point effort on Space Chimp.
Shivers took Pure Smoke in the championship round – a bull he had ridden once before for 90.5 points – while Oliveira selected Speckled Ivory with the second pick in the draft. Shane Proctor, who was the only other rider going into the final round with three scores on the leader board, took After Party.
Proctor, who finished second in the average for the second time in three weeks, won the final round with a crowd-pleasing 90-point ride. His 348 points put him atop the leader board for all of one out when Oliveira outscored him in the average by two points, riding Speckled Ivory for 88 points.
Shivers came down early off of Pure Smoke and finished third in the average with 264.75 points, followed by Fabiano Vieira and Pistol Robinson, who won the third round with 89.75 points on White Velvet.
Next week, the BFTS will be in Fresno, Calif.
