PUEBLO, Colo. - Last weekend, Stormy Wing needed to double his total number of qualified rides for the season to ensure he wouldn't be cut from the Built Ford Tough Series.

He did just that.

The 22-year-old from Dalhart, Texas, went 3-for-4 and finished fourth in the average in Baltimore, but it might as well have taken place 150 million years ago during the Jurassic period.

"I go at each ride, and when it's over with I think of it as dinosaur bones," he said afterward.

'I go at each ride, and when it's over with I think of it as dinosaur bones.'

For the record, he rode three bulls - not dinosaurs - at the 1st Mariner Arena, and looked good doing it.

On Friday night, he rode Carolina Kicker in the opening round for 85.5 points, and then in the first short round he went from 10th in the average to third with another 87.5 points on Gypsy Boots.

His effort that night moved him from 30th in the world standings to 22nd with two rounds remaining.

He then rode Movin' On for 87 points in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round.

Stormy Wing covers Movin' On for 87 points in Baltimore.

"I didn't come (to Baltimore) with the intention not get cut," Wing said. "I came with the intention to win first place and then let the rest of it take care of itself."

He's now ranked 17th in the world standings.

Had he finished Baltimore outside of the Top 25, he would have faced having to ride his way back on the Touring Pro Division. Instead he heads to Oklahoma City 415 points ahead of the 25th ranked rider - Dakota Beck - and only 182.25 points outside the Top 15.

"I got it done and I'm healthy to get on another one," he said, "and the only person to thank for that is God. I like to go have fun and do whatever, but He's always there and has blessed me with great family and friends in life and the talent to come do what I love."

Since he made his BFTS debut in 2010, Wing's name has almost become synonymous with needing to perform every fifth event.

Yet somehow he always manages to come through.

'I think about nothing but what's happening right now, and I'm having a great time.'

When asked why he does it to himself, he replied, "I can't answer that."

"I really don't know. I wish I didn't do it to myself, because it causes stress. It's part of bull riding and you're going to meet adversity in your life and that's what a champion does - he overcomes it and keeps going."

Like the dinosaurs that dominated the earth, when Wing does ride, he dominates the competition.

Last year, he made the whistle only 17 times, but five of those qualified rides were round-wins, including Round 4 of the PBR World Finals when he rode Delco for 90.25 points.

For Wing, it's a matter of consistency.

"I can't say anything because it would be an excuse," said Wing, who has now ridden four of his past five bulls. "I don't know what the deal is."

He added, "I think about nothing but what's happening right now, and I'm having a great time."
