North Carolina native Mauney wins Greensboro Invitational

GREENSBORO, N.C. - On the final ride of the night, North Carolina native J.B. Mauney brought the crowd in the Greensboro Coliseum to a deafening roar when he rode Superfreak for 89 points to win the Professional Bull Riders Built Ford Tough Series Greensboro Invitational presented by Sheplers.com.

Mauney rode all three bulls he attempted, finishing with 263.75 points and earning $41,415 for the win. It is the fourth victory of the season for Mauney, which is more than any other rider. 

Superfreak is owned by PBR founder and Ring of Honor member Jerome Davis and PBR rider Brian Canter, who are also both from North Carolina. Mauney won the Built Ford Tough Championship Round with the 89-point ride, and also tied for first in Round 1 on Friday.

NBC Sports Network will broadcast Round 2 and the Built Ford Tough Championship Round in HD at 7 p.m. ET on Sunday. Veteran broadcaster Craig Hummer will provide the play-by-play. Color commentary will be provided by nine-time World Champion and PBR co-founder Ty Murray. Dirt-level interviews will be handled by Leah Garcia.

Ben Jones and Robson Palermo, who were the only other riders to ride three bulls, finished second and third with 260 points and 254 points, respectively. Jones was second in the championship round with 88.75 points on Back Bender (Wolf Creek Cattle Company) while Palermo had 79.75 points on BigTexTrailers.com (Jeff Robinson Bucking Bulls) to finish third. Palermo won Round 2 with 88.50 points on Dark Shadow (Wolf Creek Cattle Company).

Defending World Champion Silvano Alves finished 10th in Greensboro, and increased his lead in the Built Ford Tough Series season standings to 851.25 points over L.J. Jenkins. Mauney moved up from fifth place to fourth place, while Palermo climbed from 12th to 10th and Jones moved from 16th to 14th.

RFD-HD (Teague Bucking Bulls, LLC) won the Pabst Blue Ribbon Bull Award for being the high-marked bull of the event, earning 45.25 out of a possible 50 points, after bucking off 2010 World Champion Renato Nunes in the championship round.

The first 26 events of the season have produced 19 different winners. Mauney has the most wins with four, while Alves, Palermo, 2008 World Champion Guilherme Marchi, and Fabiano Vieira each have two wins. Mauney posted his three victories in the first 12 events of the season before breaking his hand.

The PBR Built Ford Tough Series will return to Philadelphia next weekend for the first time since 2004 for the Philadelphia Invitational presented by Cooper Tires at the Wells Fargo Center. Bull riding begins at 8 p.m. ET on Friday, Oct. 5, and at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday, Oct. 6. Greensboro is the 26th stop of the 2012 BFTS season, which opened in January with capacity crowds at Madison Square Garden in New York. The BFTS will make 28 stops in 23 states before the Built Ford Tough World Finals in Las Vegas on Oct. 24-28, 2012. The World Finals are where the PBR World Champion will be crowned and awarded the coveted championship buckle and a $1 million bonus. The richest bull riding event on the planet, the World Finals has a total purse of more than $2 million.
