KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City get ready.
The PBR's Built Ford Tough Series bucks into the Sprint Center this weekend for the Built Ford Tough Invitational presented by Ecoboost on Saturday and Sunday. This is the ninth consecutive year and 11th appearance the BFTS has made in Kansas City.
All Top 35 bull riders on the BFTS will compete in Round 1 on Saturday night and Round 2 on Sunday afternoon, each facing one bull each day. After Round 2 on Sunday, the riders with the top 10-15 scores after two rounds will advance to the Built Ford Tough Championship Round for one more ride and a chance at the $30,000 event title. Over the event's 11-year history, the PBR has awarded more than $1 million dollars in prize money in Kansas City.
Following Round 1 on Saturday, the event will feature the sport's best athletes in the 15/15 Bucking Battle. The series' Top 15 bull riders will be randomly matched against the 15 highest-ranked bulls in Kansas City for a special round of action. Airing on CBS Sunday at 1 p.m. ET, the 15/15 Bucking Battle offers a total purse of $21,000. BFTS points earned will be doubled in the 15/15 Bucking Battle and count toward the overall PBR World Champion's title. This is the third 15/15 Bucking Battle this season.
The 15/15 Bucking Battle also will feature the Monster Energy Money Bull, which carries a bonus purse for a qualified ride by the cowboy matched with him. All season, riders have been randomly paired with the designated Monster Energy Money Bull, aiming to win the increasing bonus. To date, no rider has successfully made a qualified ride aboard the Monster Energy Money Bull, therefore, its bonus has increased to $57,000.
The Monster Energy Money Bull in Kansas City is Bushwacker (Julio Moreno Bucking Bulls). A top contender for this year's world title, Bushwacker has bucked only twice this year, dumping current world leader Shane Proctor in Oklahoma City and Snyder in St. Louis last weekend. He has bucked off the last 37 riders he has faced, a BFTS record. Mike Lee, the 2004 PBR World Champion, will face Bushwacker in Kansas City. Lee has had the opportunity to ride Bushwacker once in his career. He lasted just 2.49 seconds when the two met in 2011.
Other notable match-ups during the 15/15 Bucking Battle will be fan favorite J.B. Mauney aboard Altercation (Cody Ohl/Barker/Leschyshyn/K-C). Mauney will be back in action after suffering a fibula injury in Anaheim, Calif., two weeks ago. The two have not previously met.
Current world No. 2 Silvano Alves will take on Smackdown (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Julie Rosen). This will be the first time the two have met in BFTS competition. Alves is looking to regain the top spot in the BFTS standings, while Smackdown looks to better his career buck-off percentage of 84 percent.
Who Dat (K-C Bucking Bulls/Spark-lin Acres) is matched against top-ranked Shane Proctor. Proctor has attempted Who Dat twice in BFTS competition, in 2012 and 2011. Both times, the bull bested him in less than five seconds. With only one out in 2013, Who Dat is unridden this year.
The Built Ford Tough Series Invitational will kick off with a Bull Walk and weigh-in on Friday at 1 p.m. at the Kansas City Power & Light District. In conjunction with PBR Big Sky, L.J. Jenkins, Bushwacker, the infamous Chicken on a Chain (Robinson/Tedesco/Larry the Cable Guy) and the PBR Big Sky Buckle Bunnies will be on hand to celebrate the weekend's activities.
