KANSAS CITY, Mo. ― Before a sold-out crowd of more than 13,000 on Saturday night at the Sprint Center, 19-year old Gage Gay of Staley, N.C., stole the show with an electrifying 89-point ride and is now sitting atop the leaderboard after Round 1 of the Professional Bull Riders Caterpillar Classic, part of the 2014 Built Ford Tough Series.
The usual suspects – J.B. Mauney, Joao Ricardo Vieira, Valdiron de Oliveira, L.J. Jenkins, Mike Lee and the like – had trouble making the 8-second buzzer, while Gay and other young talent took it to the ABBI Classic bulls in Round 1.
Gay was the 11th bull rider of the night and his 89 points aboard One Shot (Sycamore Springs Ranch) was enough to take first place in the round and remain there the entire evening. Pistol Robinson notched an 88.75-point ride against Karaoke (Elite Bucking Bulls/Mike White) for second place and Emilio Resende, the 2012 PBR Rookie of the Year, recorded 88.5 points on Kung Fu Fighter (Wagoner Ranch/Hodges) for third place.
Robson Palermo, returning to the lineup in Kansas City, Mo., after nursing a hamstring injury for several weeks, is tied for fourth with Montana’s Matt Triplett with a score of 87.25 points.
2008 PBR World Champion Guilherme Marchi is another step closer to the 500 mark, capturing his 496th career qualified ride with an 85.25-point ride on Stuntin Like My Daddy (Larry & Rhonda Reid/The Jaynes Gang). He is currently in eighth place.
Round 2 of the Caterpillar Classic and the Built Ford Tough Championship Round will take place Sunday afternoon starting at 2:50 p.m. These final rounds will air live on CBS Sports Network at 4 p.m. ET.
The BFTS is televised every week on CBS, CBS Sports Network and networks around the world. BFTS telecasts are produced for the PBR under a multi-year agreement with David Neal Productions, a Los Angeles-based production company led by 34-time Emmy® Award winner and Peabody Award winner David Neal, who serves as executive producer.
Kansas City is the eighth stop of 27 on the 2014 PBR Built Ford Tough Series schedule. The season kicked off Jan. 3-5 at Madison Square Garden in New York and will conclude at the PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals in Las Vegas on Oct. 22-26 when the 2014 PBR World Champion, the bull rider who earns the most points during the 2014 season, will receive the coveted World Championship belt buckle and a $1 million bonus.
