Oliveira out; World Cup appearance in jeopardy

Broken shoulder will sideline World No. 2 for weeks

PUEBLO, Colo. (March 10, 2010) - X-rays have confirmed that Valdiron de Oliveira has a broken bone in his shoulder and will be out of competition for the better part of two months.

Oliveira, currently ranked second in the world, was one of two riders named to the Brazil’s World Cup team last weekend. The injury leaves his participation in doubt, and threatens his chances of contending for a world title.

In a text message sent early Wednesday morning, Dr. Tandy Freeman clarified the extent of Oliveira’s injuries.

“Valdiron has a non-displaced fracture of the greater tuberosity of his right humeral head (broken insertion of the rotator cuff on the ball of the shoulder),” Freeman wrote. “X-rays also revealed a healing fracture of his coracoid process (biceps origin and pectoralis minor insertion site on the shoulder blade) consistent with the injury sustained in Oklahoma City. He would not come into the office for X-rays for that injury.

“Neither injury requires surgery unless he doesn’t give them a chance to heal. He will be out a minimum of six weeks, more likely eight to 12 weeks. It’s not likely that anyone could ride successfully with injury until then, because of rotator cuff weakness and pain and risk of further injury necessitating surgery and prolonged time out.”

Freeman concluded his text message by adding, “He won’t ride in the World Cup.”

Adriano Moraes, captain of Brazilian team, thinks differently.

Moraes said that he’s been in touch with Oliveira, and will leave him on the roster as an alternate, giving the 30-year-old a chance to heal.

“He’s my personal friend,” Moraes said, “so my biggest concern isn’t for the World Cup. It’s the world title. I thought he had the best chance because he’s one of the healthiest riders, even though he’s a crying baby when he gets off the bulls, but he’s a lion when he’s on them.”

Moraes said it was easy to doubt the severity of the injury, considering Oliveira would “make funny faces in the arena, like he was in serious pain,” but that afterward he would be all smiles. “I don’t know what that was about,” he added.

This weekend, Moraes and the other captains will name the remaining members of their teams.

He said that last year he went with an experienced team and it didn’t turn out the way he would have expected. He suspects some members were “too comfortable” and “maybe a little greedy.”

As a result, he intends to employ the same strategy J.W. Hart used last year when he took a relatively young American team and defeated the heavily favored Brazilians in their home country.

Moraes said he intends to “spice it up” and expect more from his team leaders.

Moraes did indicate that Renato Nunes, who is currently ranked sixth in the world standings, will not be among those named to this year’s team.

“The reason why is I need guys to be a little bit more involved in the team,” Moraes explained, “without complaining or negativity.”

Neither is Ednei Caminhas expected to be a member of this year’s team, even though the 34-year-old former World Champion has ridden in the past four short rounds, not including the Iron Cowboy Invitational.

Moraes questioned Caminhas’ consistency.

“How many bulls has he ridden in the short go? I need players who can ride anything,” he said.

World Cup rules allow captains to make discretionary changes up to seven days prior to the event. After that, changes to the roster can only be made due to injuries.

The upcoming World Cup will take place April 16, 17 and 18 in Las Vegas as the Thomas & Mack Center.

I was pretty surprised when Renato wasn't chosen for the Brazilian team, but as soon as
Adriano said he wasn't, Renato put together three 90+ rides in a row. Maybe Adriano knows how
to motivate each guy in a different way. Not how I'd want to be handled, but I'm not a bull
rider. Adriano knew he had some young guns waiting in the wings--how amazing is Alves?--so
maybe he wanted to goose Renato into living up to his talent. Ednei? He is not consistent; in fact, in the past few months, I think I've seen him make only a couple of rides.

As for the "crying baby" comment about Oliveira, Moraes was being funny (and BTW, isn't the only one to mention that Valdiron is often wincing after a ride). Cowboys are always cracking on each other, and that kind of teasing a lot of times is the way some men express affection...unfortunately.

That macho crap about how important it is to be "tough" -- not admitting you have a human body and something is hurting-- is how great riders end up being out of action for months because they
didn't get the surgery they needed at the time they needed it. Postponing reality doesn't make it go away. What's NORMAL is hollering or crying when your jaw is broken or your leg is fractured, like Ryan Dirteater. Real men CAN admit when they're injured.

Months ago I emailed either the PBR or Versus (I forget which) and, among other things, said I really hoped they didn't turn bull riding into a phony WWE spectacle. Whoever thinks there is any similarity between bull riding and fake wrestling matches is a moron. The cowboys are for real and the bulls are for real. Nothing about the WWE is real.

My final two cents (for now): Can anyone please convince the commentators that they don't need to be chattering nonstop through the entire event? And if they must talk continuously, how about sticking to what's actually happening in the arena, or what's directly related to what's happening in the arena? Viewers first want to know who's riding, which bull they're riding, what their ranking is, what they're doing while they're riding, and what their score is. When that's done, then throw in the history of their injuries, their career, or whatever.

PS-- If I hear one more reference to the "Tiny" Tar Heel, or that Shane Proctor is JB Mauney's brother-in-law, I'm gonna scream. Brian Canter is an excellent rider from North Carolina, period. Who care about his height?? And I'm sure by now everyone in the bull riding world is well aware that Shane and JB are now related. Find something else to jaw about, guys!

Chadro, in reference to your comment about JW, you must not watch PBRNOW on RFD-TV--JW and
Justin have a "Moron" segment which actually means "More on that later" so it's a play on
words. It's an inside joke for those of us that know about the "Moron" segment. JW isn't
making fun of anyone--it's a sense of humor!!

I know JW probably didnt go to charm school, but I think them guys need to choose their words, i.e. insults, better. Don't call someone a moron. Say they made a foolish mistake. You know what I mean. Its just like someone was sayin, how the pbr is being promoted like wrestling. That plays right into that.

“That Valdiron, a guy who grew up poor in Brazil, could come over here and through strength, determination, guts, and will was able to buy a ranch and make a better life for himself, all through the guts of being a bullrider – I think this is fantastic.” Ty Murray 2/22/10

“Valdiron was definitely on the short list to win the Iron Cowboy, he is a guy that is hard to get on the ground.” Ty Murray 2/22/10

If you listen to Ty’s blog on 3/910, you can tell by the tone of his voice he is not putting Valdiron down, just making an observation, the same one that various others have made long before this injury. Both of the above statements show that Ty has a lot of respect for Valdiron.

I went back and listened to all of Ty’s blogs from 02/08-03/09 and never heard him say he wanted the PBR to be like the WWE, so now I’m wondering when he said that.
On 02/16/10 he said that the WWE has 500 million viewers worldwide and what they seem to like is the toughness of the athletes, which is something bullriders also have. So maybe some of them would be bullriding fans also.
On 02/08/10 he said his WWE appearance was a way to get the sport of bullriding out to a giant audience. He found it exciting that bullriding was starting to be included in more mainstream and popular sports.

Okay, Ty Murray, here is your chance to criticize Valdiron again. Come on, attack him again for being a drama queen. For not being able to Cowboy Up.

Up until a month ago, I had the utmost respect for Ty Murray. But after his comments about the PBR needing to be more like the WWE and his attack on Valdiron -- sorry, everyone, but in my book he's nothing but a Cl!@# A Jerk.

I am so very sad for Valdiron, I think he one of the best riders in PBR. I also think Adriano should pick Renato and Ednei for the World Cup. Insulting your team does not get good results from my opinion. Take it easy Valdiron and take the 2 months to heal properly, I am an LPN and have seen people go back to work too soon and lose muscle and tendon through surgery because they weren't healded. God Bless You!!

I agree with cdtucker1. I'm a city girl who has only been following the PBR for 3 years also. I agree with her regarding the "Smackdown" comment. Last year it got a little cheesy with the skits they were doing. I can't stand to watch wrestling...so I'd channel surf during those skits. Please don't put PBR fans in the same boat as wrestling fans. If they go down that road, I would certainly quit watching.

Everyone should feel free to voice their opinions. It's not necessary to SCREAM at us or cuss.

cdtucker1, I agree with you. I was out of town last weekend and I was watching the Sunday show last night. In the first 10 minutes (I have not watched the rest yet), Justin McKee mentioned several times the "different story lines that we are following". He also mentioned "drama" more than once. This not a soap opera! There should be no "story line" or "drama", only pure, raw bull riding.

As a relatively new fan to PBR (only having followed for the past 3 years), and as someone who is not a traditional fan(not the cowgirl type), I feel compelled to ask if anyone has thought all of this "drama" sounds scripted/rehearsed?
I've really enjoyed following the PBR but all this melodrama sounds more like some scripted Smackdown wrestling thing. To me (and I could be very wrong I'll admit) all these controversies sound like they may have been created for marketing purposes.
Regardless, I love watching Valdiron ride, and I hope he allows his injuries to heal properly before riding again.

It makes me sad to see that (from the sounds of it) the Brazilian team appears to be imploding with all these supposed rifts! And it sure does seem like Adriano's personality has done a 180 in the last couple of years. A shame, really.

Preciousflower: We read you loud and clear, feel free to stop shouting at us.

Webpbr: The only reason that I can think of for a rift between Adriano & Ednei goes back to
when Ednei won his championship. Ednei got a LOT of people upset because he refused every
single reride he was offered that year. He wasn't willing to risk losing a single point even
though it cost him a chance to pick up a paycheck. I suspect that more than a few of the
killer B's got his story about winning a title by not giving back points, because most of them
tried it for at least one season. Refusing re-rides cost Marchi at least one title shot.

IMHO,Ednei isn't consistant enough or hungry enough for a World Cup team. There have been too
many times when the only things keeping him on tour were either injury or title exemptions.
Remember that Brazil has something to redeem after the way they lost at home last year. It just
might be time for some more more future stars.

Tonight on PBRNow on RFD TV both Justin and JW on the "Moron on That" segment gave the "moron" award to Adriano for not taking Renato for the World Cup. I am very sorry to hear for Valdiron's injury & hope he takes enuff time to let totally heal.

Re ANY COMMENTS made by ANY COACH. If you didn't hear it in person don't !@#ume anything. Hopefully each coach will put personalities aside & do their best to chose a team that can represent their country.

Let's face it folks, do any of us know the coaches personally. I don't mean having met them at an event. I'd have to guess the answer is no. So discount what you read or hear second or third hand.

I really dislike reading people slam a coach, rider, country etc when they DO NOT know that person.

I'm glad to know that I'm not alone in my opinion regarding Adriano's comments. I still think he's one of the greatest bullriders of all time but that doesn't mean he'd be a good coach.

I think the World Cup is important. No matter where you take up residence, your heart always stays with your native country. It's great to represent your homeland no matter what the reason. I love the Brasilians, but always root for the USA at World Cup.

Farmgirl, I noticed a change in Adriano last summer when I saw him in Nashville. He wasn't as friendly and chatty as he used to be; I chalked it up to just having a bad day that day, but apparently it's not just that. I was surprised at how friendly Justin has become, as he used to be polite but not necessarily friendly with the fans when he was riding.

My "signature move" would be a wince if my arm was broke also. Much like JW's signature move of acting like his hips and legs were broke when he bucked off. Unless of course he happened to ride one and he did the "I cant hear you sign" by cupping his ear.

Valdiron got a bad rap this past week and he is absolutely a top tier rider weekly. I hope he heals quickly. I like Valdiron and his attitude.

Adriano says Oliviero is his friend. A friend wouldn't want to hurt the others career. It seems Adriano may just want to stroke his own ego. Hope Valderon's friend Paulo Crimber can influence Valderon to do what's best and don't worry about Adriano's ego. This World Cup isn't that great a deal anyway. Any team could beat the others on any given day. Like in Baseball--the worst team wins 1/3 of the games. The best team loses 1/3 of the games. Anyway, that's my opinion.

Terrible news!! This certainly puts a twist on it. I hope Valdiron heals quickly and doesn't miss too much of the action. Is it just me or does it seem that Adriano has gotten a little aloof since he stopped riding. It kinda seems like he doesn't appear to be as humble as he used to be.

Some people try and motivate by using fear, some by intimidation, some by insults, some by speeches, some by their own actions (leading). Adriano seems to use public insults to his fellow countrymen to try and motivate them. I know that years ago he said that when he was hurting, JW called him a name and it made him mad and motivated him to go on and win the World title. I think he believes, mistakenly, that if you insult someone that they will "man up" and try and prove you wrong. This tactic does not work for everybody.

My dad worked for a car dealer that would insult, scream, cuss and tell the guys they were worthless. Then tell them to go out and sell cars. Some just don't know how to motivate different people. JW seems to be able to use different techniques for each rider. Adriano does not seem to be able to master "coaching".

Does anyone know why there is a rift between Adriano and Ednei?

Valdiron's been my pick to win it this year. Having had a fractured shoulder myself, I certainly sympathize with him. I am put off by Adriano's comments regarding the Brazilian bull riders. He speaks English perfectly well and knows exactly what he's saying. I hope my friends speak better about me than he does of his friends on the PBR. I think I would take my medical advice from the doctor and heal up rather than bow to the pressure of Adriano.

Rebeinbobbi-I heard a interview with Tandy and I believe he said he would only stop a rider
from riding when it is a life threatening injury. I don't think a broken shoulder would be
life threatening. Maybe career ending if he comes back too soon. I hope Valiron gets well soon

Maybe if Brazil looses this year, they should give Ednei a shot at leading the team.

Sorry to hear about Valdiron's injury. I really thought he had a shot at the title this year. As far as him coming back early, doesn't Tandy have the say in that now or is that just for concussions? I thought the PBR gave Tandy the power to sit cowboys down if he thought there would be a safety issues for all involved... the rider and the bull fighters if the rider can't get away.

This is the worst of news!! Valderon has been riding for a while with a broken bone and being called a cry baby when he didn't even complain enough for an x-ray on it. Now with another break, I hope he takes time to heal completely before coming back. Don't let anyone talk you into coming back too soon. If anyone tries that, they are looking out for themselves and not you, Valderon. I will think less of Adriano if he tries talking Valderon back for the World Cup. I'm sure Valderon loves his country, but anyone in Brazil or here that thinks anything of him, will not want him to mess up his career by reinjuring himself.

Maybe we shouldn't get so upset with Ty and KRC, because in all fairness, they didn't know until Tandy announced today that Val's shoulder is broken. KRC is a journalist and goes with the facts at hand, so. . . .

Also, KRC did point out that Ty wasn't questioning Val's toughness but rather his, to coin a phrase, tendency to "cry wolf." They were simply calling it with what they had, knew and saw from previous times--Adriano too for that matter. I've heard all the cowboys say from time to time that they tease each other and give each other great grief at every opportunity. Don't think I'd survive very long in that environment, but then I'm not an athlete nor have I ever been, so I've nothing to compare it too. Seems a bit off putting to me, by hey, they are tough guys, after all :) Still, tough guys have feelings too.

Hey Twiggy, maybe SHE is a HE?! :)

Let's hope Valdiron takes all the times he needs to heal...REALLY heal. Perhaps the World
Finals should be his target this year and that will propel him into the next year.
Meanwhile, KRC, you might consider getting a few more facts before branding one of the best
riders in the sport a wuss. I suspect that riding a world-cl!@# bull when you have a broken
bone (whatever a coracoid process is) would make most of us look as if we were hurting.

I would cry too if I won a quarter of a million dollars.
Coming from the poorest county in the united states.
Hang in there Valdiron you'll be back stronger than ever after your shoulder heals.

So sorry to hear this news about Valdiron! I do hope that he takes the time off to heal, and not come back too quickly and risk further injury.
Valdiron, I'll keep you in my prayers!

Well, Adriano has never been one to mince words, but he's a great amb!@#ador to the sport, so let's cut him some slack and chalk it up to "lost in translation."

I, too, was a little put off by Ty's and KRC's commentary this week about Valdiron, because I just asked yesterday whether or not we really knew what was wrong with Valdiron's shoulder. Man sakes alive, he's been riding since OKC with a broken shoulder and another healing fracture--no wonder he's wincing a lot. Holy gee whiz, it's his riding shoulder too, but I guess Mike Lee said that was better than his free-arm one.

At this point in the season, it's anybody's guess who's going to be World Champ this year. Unless one cowboy goes into the Finals as far ahead as McBride did in 2007, no one can say, and even then if McBride had bucked off his fourth bull Guilherme, perhaps, could have caught up.

I prefer to wish everyone well both mentally and physically, regardless of their names :)

Get well Valdiron--the first Iron Cowboy :)

I'd wince too if I was riding with a broken shoulder on my riding arm
I think his chance for a world title just went out the window, and that's a shame.

Shame about Valdiron, I would have loved seeing him give JB a run for the money and possibly win the world title. But what about Marchi? Will be be in the world cup?

My heart goes out to Valdiron. He is such a fine young man with a love for his sport and country. To be called a crying baby isn't right. Valdiron is filled with emotion and it is just as manly to cry than not. In fact, it shows a tender side of the man that is welcomed and refreshing in this day and age. Hearing about his emotion after leaving the arena after his win at the Iron Cowboy and why, made that win extra special for this young man. So glad he is proud of where he is and hasn't forgotten those hard years behind him. He saved his farm, his family and himself.
    NOW--Go USA TEAM !!!

Maybe Adriano has some young, hungry and unknown to us Brazilians to bring, which would be exciting, but not considering Renato does seem odd. Who knows about the "negativity" comment-- Moraes isn't big on tact at times. ;)

I can only hope that Valdiron sits out the entire time that Dr Tandy tells him to no matter
how much pressure is put on him to come back early.

Secondly, I am shocked that Adriano is not considering the number 6 guy in the standings for
his World Cup team. I think that would be a big mistake not to take Renato unless his riding
    changes drastically before then.

Most everyone knows there is no love lost between Adriano & Ednei so the statement about him
wasn't a surprise even though I know Ednei would love to go to the World Cup & represent his
    home country.

I think the second headline should say "two months," not "two weeks."

And this is a shame. I was thinking this would be Valdiron's year. I hope he heals up quickly and well.
