And then there were five
Final selections for World Cup teams to be announced tonight
GLENDALE, Ariz. (March 13, 2010) - A year ago, the Canadians thought the third time would be a charm.
But after two second-place finishes, they finished third in last year’s World Cup event. This year, their mantra is about consistency.
“It’s going to take Canada being more consistent, staying on more bulls than we have, and that’s just about all it’s going to take,” said Aaron Roy, who joins Scott Schiffner as the first riders named to the 2010 team.
Tonight the remaining three selections of team captain Cody Snyder will be announced, along with the remaining riders from the other four countries. The announcement will be made on Versus during the live broadcast from Glendale, Ariz.
Roy and Schiffner are the only two Canadians who have represented their country in all four World Cup events.
Canada scored a combined 1,027 points last year in Barretos, Brazil, compared to the United States, who won the event with 1,387.75 points.
There are six rounds, with each country attempting five bulls per round and keeping three of those five scores for a maximum of 18 scores over the course of the three-day event.
Roy is hoping for a repeat of his 2008 performance, when he and Vince Northrop were the only two riders in the entire event to go 4-for-4 in Chihuahua, Mexico.
“We’ve always been up there (in the standings),” said Roy, recalling their past successes. “We won second twice and third last year, but it’s just it because we’re not as consistent as the other teams. When we won second, it all came down to the last ride.
“I know every one of the guys who’s going to get picked for the team can ride as good as anybody in the world. It’s just them getting over that mental thing that’s going to allow them to stay on.”
It’s rumored that Snyder will choose a trio of youngsters to join the two veterans. Roy, by virtue of his continued success on the Built Ford Tough Series, is clearly the anchor for this year’s team.
As in years past, the Canadians seem to thrive on the team atmosphere created by the World Cup format.
“If there are new guys coming in there you can try and coach them along and try and calm their nerves down ‘til they get on,” said Roy, who later added, “When we come to the World Cup, we come together as a team.
“We’re behind each other the whole way.”
Mexico
Mexico has struggled not only in the competition itself, but in simply assembling a team of five healthy riders cleared for international travel. As a result, this year they are employing co-captains – Amando Aguirre, President of the Mexican Federation of Rodeo, and Ruben Mujica, President of Cuernos Chuecos (a Mexican bull riding league) – and coach Gerardo Venegas to make the decisions.
United States
Going for what would be their third straight win, the pressure is on the Americans, considering captain J.W. Hart has the largest pool to choose from. There are six Americans currently ranked in the Top 10 of the world standings, and another three – Kody Lostroh, Jody Newberry and Jordan Hupp – trending upward.
Australia
Once again, Troy Dunn has his work cut out for him. In three previous Cup events, the Australians have never seriously contended. Last week, he named Pete and Jared Farley as the first two members. Aside from Ben Jones, who scored two 90-point rides last week in Kansas City, it’s unknown who else Dunn might select.
Brazil
It’s no surprise that the Brazilians felt embarrassed by last year’s second-place finish in front of 80,000 of their countrymen. But no one could have expected the harsh criticism from team captain Adriano Moraes, who said he intends to “spice it up” without the services of Renato Nunes, Ednei Caminhas, or the injured Valdiron de Oliveira. Instead, Moraes intends to go with a younger, coachable trio of riders coupled with Robson Palermo and Guilherme Marchi.

I disagree mofan. I think that this is just a "slump" year for Mexico and Canada and honestly, I think Mexico has a much better chance this year than last. Its a fact that Brazil and the U.S. are the two favorites, by far, but I wouldn't count out those other guys. Guys like Scott Schiffner can hang with anyone. Them Aussie's are darn tough too.

March 15, 2010Austin just called me (on my answering machine) and invited me to come to the World Cup. I am not a paying member of Team PBR.It makes me wonder if they (PBR) is desperate for people to attend the World Cup. I personally believe that the World Cup is bogus this year. Only Brazil and the USA can field a real PBR top 40 rider team. Maybe it was a good idea a few years ago but look at Mexico and Canada. They really can't field a team of top 40 riders. I only hope that the USA riders don't get hurt and can't continue the rest of the year. This year seems to be a bad year for injuries. -

March 14, 2010I like the fact that J.W. has some wiggle room to change the lineup. If Kody tells J.W. that he can contribute, he should be on the team. I would be for Mike White being honorary member. Rocky's comment that he couldn't give "thumbs up" is priceless. If Kody can't make it, I would go with Jody Newberry for sure. Go U.S.A. -

March 14, 2010I would like to see Mike white and maybe Chris Shivers be made honorary member of the world
cup team. Couldn't hurt. -

March 14, 2010I suspect that Adriano may be keeping Renato as his reserve. Remember that teams can be
shuffled without explanation until the week before the Cup. That last week, it has to be due
to an injury. Both Robson and Guillerme have nagging injuries. Guillerme did his cartwheel just
fine, but he was wearing ice later on in the round. -

March 14, 2010webpbr- Sorry if my comment come off sounding negative. I didn't intend for it to. As a matter of fact I don't usually read the comments because of all the negativity.
But the world cup wasn't the whole summer. And he didn't miss any of the other events. It's just my opinion. Again I apoligize if it sounds like a negative comment. -

March 13, 2010JuddieK - Welcome to the comment section, as I have not seen your name before. Odd that your first comment is negative. Oviously you are not JW, and he does not seem to have a problem with Kody's decision last year. It seems you were never a Kody fan, because if you were you would understand why he decide not to risk further injury and that is why he did not participate in any lower level events last year, after he hurt his elbow and then shoulder. He also needed the summer off, which is when the World Cup was, to rest his elbow so he complete the rest of the season. Every rider, announcer, and PBR staff backed his decision. I think he has enough fans, so you will not be missed. -

March 13, 2010I would not have picked Lostroh, were I J.W for the simple fact he refused the world cup last year because he wanted to focus on winning the finals. Well J.B. and Marchi were also out to win the finals, yet they rode for their countries. I haven't been a fan of Lostroh's since he refused last year. -

March 13, 2010Seems kinda interesting that the 2 Brazilian riders that Adriano chose not to pick for his
World Cup team both ended up in the top 5 tonight. Will be interesting to hear Adriano's spin
on it when McKee talks to him tommorrow. -

March 13, 2010Have always been a big Adriano fan. However, I do not understand why he did not choose Renato
to be on the Brazil team for the World Cup. Hope he won't regret his decision. -

March 13, 2010reznibd: I was under the impression that the PBR Board of Directors decided it. Last year, after the Mexican struggles in Brazil, the article I'm linking below said that the Board of Directors were discussing replacing Rocky.

Maybe self appointed. -

March 13, 2010I really don't know that much about Adriano, I know that when he was riding he seemed to be
the spokesman for the Brazilians, maybe just because he could speak better english.Paulo speaks
english well also so either one would be able to translate what neede to be done to the rider.
I don't know who makes the call of who is captain but I would think if the riders don't get along
well with Adriano then their feelings should be considered.
I've forgotten, does points/money count toward finals for the riders?
Speaking of healing, there are several in PBR that are not 100%, in my mind I too think they
would be better off concentrating on winning the gold buckle. -

March 13, 2010This is OT but I heard this morning that the World Boxing Organization welterweight title fight between Manny Pacquiao and Joseph Clottey is being held in Cowboy Stadium and is expected to draw around 45,000 people. How great that the PBR Iron Cowboy drew about the same amount and wasn’t hype anywhere near as much. I just wonder how many people the PBR event would have drawn if it had been given the same amount of coverage as this fight. I also wonder how many boxing fans will complain about not being able to see the ring and having to watch it on the big screen. -

March 13, 2010Crimber would probably make a good coach. As far as Adriano goes, there's not enough mustard
for that Hot Dog.
And really, I've been wondering, how much can a coach really coach these guys? It's not as
if they don't know what they are doing.
We had a rodeo coach when I was in college, and he really couldn't show, do or tell us anything
that another rider couldn't. -

March 13, 2010Adriano is out for Adriano - NOT his team. He is not acting like a coach - and sounds like a cattle prod. I hope Valdiron doesn't ride the Wor;d Cup AND that Guilherme Marchi.doesn't either. These men need to HEAL and concentrate on winning their Gold Buckles. -
PBR fan
March 13, 2010I think that Brazil should have Crimber as a coach. He seems to be a real cool guy and know a lot about bullrider. -
Twiggy
March 13, 2010Webpbr, very well organized comment. I've been stewing for a couple of days trying to think
of a way to say the same thing you said with as much tact as you did.
Adriano was a great bull rider and without a doubt is a great ambas_sador for the PBR. With
that being said, one really has contemplate whether or not he is the man for the job when it
comes to the coaching position for team Brazil. When you talk to any of the Brazilian riders
about doing rehab work in Brazil, they all use the same guy, and he pushes them using the
same tactics that Adriano uses. (Must be a cultural thing) I know that if I was trying to
rehab an injury it would take someone like that pushing me to get the best out of me, but,
trying to get the best performance out of someone when it comes to riding a bull, those
tactics probably wouldn't work.
Looking at the bigger picture, I sure hope this doesn't have an effect on the friendships &
bonds that all of the Brazilian riders have with one another. -
webpbr
March 13, 2010Maybe Brazil needs to go the route of Mexico and change coaches. Just like in all sports, it is not necessarily the players, but maybe the coach. The coach has to get the most from his guys. Let's see, the coach has a "rift" with one guy (Ednei), calls another guy a "cry baby" (Valdiron), says on national tv that one guy does not "perform well under pressure" (Marchi) and says that another guy is "negative" (Renato). Does anybody see a pattern? Maybe Moraes should "spice it up" and resign and let someone else coach.
