Rookie race update
Nance leads all comers, with Farley and Paguioto just behind
LAS VEGAS (November 2, 2009) - Cody Nance tied for ninth place in the third round of the Professional Bull Riders World Finals after turning in a score of 87.5 on Sunday.
That’s not a finish that would put him in the news of the day. In fact, it was four places out of the money.
But for Nance, who is ranked No. 1 in the Daisy Rookie of the Year standings after the first weekend of the World Finals, it was huge.
The Paris, Tenn., cowboy had bucked off of his first two bulls and he just needed a score.
“I just overrode my first two bulls and it was just time to slow down and get over that little bit of jitters,” Nance said. “I just needed to go back to the basics and screw down a little tighter.”
Nance leads the Rookie of the Year title race with $133,385. He’s hoping his qualified ride in Round 3 will give him momentum going into the second weekend of the World Finals. Rounds 4 through 8 are scheduled for Thursday through Sunday at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Pete Farley, who won Round Two on Saturday after conquering Bones, the 2008 World Champion Bull, is ranked second in the rookie standings with $84,618.
Though he’s yet to make a qualified ride at the World Finals, Skeeter Kingsolver is third with $75,357.
Brazilian Thiago Paguioto is ranked fourth with $69,407. Paguito increased his chances of becoming the PBR’s freshman of the year by earning $12,000 after a third place finish in Round 3.
Paguioto was bucked of his first two bulls. Then he rebounded with an 89.75 on Sunday.
Caleb Sanderson is ranked fifth with $60,432. The Florida cowboy was bucked off in Rounds 1, 2 and 3. His best effort was a 7-second ride on opening night.
Elliott Jacoby, from Fredricksburg, Texas, is ranked sixth with $51,833. A bright spot for Jacoby is he’s tied for eighth in the average with a two-ride score of 174.75.
After three rounds of competition, Paguioto and Farley are the only rookies who have visited the pay window at the World Finals. Farley pocketed $25,000 after winning Round 2.
And it was Farley’s ride in Round Two that motivated Nance to step up his game.
“It really fired me up,” Nance said.
It also was a big confidence booster for Farley. The Australian rode Bones with the same type of command that a youngster has over a show calf that he’s broken to lead.
But conquering the famous bull didn’t come easy.
“He made me work the whole time, but I knew he was going to,” Farley said. “He never made me feel like he was going to throw me off the whole time, but he really had me working.”
Farley said he had to be loose and fluid throughout the ride in order to stay in time with Bones.
“He had my rope jerked right in my fingertips the whole time,” Farley said. “So, I was trying to kick loose and not trying to clamp down or he would have pulled it the whole way. I was just trying to stay moving and not clamp down.”
Farley said he was very impressed with Bones’ power.
“He’s the real deal,” Farley said. “For a little bull, he’s really strong.”
He received a score of 93.25 and it’s the highest marking of the first three performances of the World Finals.
Less than 24 hours after staying on Bones, Farley had a very disappointing outcome in Round 3. He was bucked off of Top Notch in 7.9 seconds, according to the wall clock in the arena. When he challenged the call and asked the judges to review the ride by instant replay, officials ruled he had stayed on for 7.94 seconds.
However, Farley has earned $25,000 and he’s tied for second in the most earnings category at the World Finals. Round 3 winner Robson Palermo also has earned $25,000 and J.B. Mauney has pocketed $40,000.
One rookie cowboy who hopes to finish in the money during the upcoming weekend is Skeeter Kingsolver. The Kansas cowboy said he will regroup and return with the same type of riding ability that helped him earn his first World Finals berth.
“I’m going to take it easy and maybe work out a little bit,” Kingsolver said. “I’m just going to have a positive mindset coming into the next weekend.”
