New World Finals game, great prizes to win every day of competition.

The morning line: Round 5

On Troubadour and Ricky Bobby, Lostroh and Mauney can't afford to blink

LAS VEGAS (November 6, 2009) - I’ve been watching the race for the World Championship in bull riding since the late 1970’s, and while I have seen it come down to one bull in the end a few times, I have not seen a race where two guys spent the whole finals trading licks the way Kody Lostroh and J.B. Mauney are. They took first and second in the round last night, and the odds are it will probably happen again tonight. Two things have become obvious about these Finals: Neither of these guys is going to give up, and those TV commentators aren’t reading my articles before they make their picks.

The Odds-On Round 5 Favorites:

The two headliners tonight will be tough to beat. For the rest of this event, whichever one of them blinks first is going to give it to the other one.

Kody Lostroh on Troubadour:
In this round, Troubadour is the bull to have, and everyone knows it. Even the TV guys. Kody has three rides in three attempts on him, and his lowest score is 91.75 points.

J.B. Mauney on Ricky Bobby:
Not to be outdone, Mauney is three-for-three on Ricky Bobby, all over 90 points. Ricky Bobby is a little better this year at throwing guys off, but he doesn’t throw off the guys who change clothes in phone booths.

The Odds-On Round 5 Favorites to win 3rd place:

Valdiron de Oliveira on Pearl Snap:

Whoever has this bull is always going to be a favorite. I was shocked that Zack Brown came down on him in Round 1, but Pearl Snap looked pretty rank. Cody Lambert must have thought so too, because he promoted him to this pen, which are the toughest bulls here. However, he’s run into the real beast in this round - Valdiron de Oliveira – whose name causes every stock contractor’s bottom lip to tremble a bit.

Mike Lee on Unabomber:
A great bull that carried Ryan McConnel to a 91.25-point score in Round 2, this should be a good matchup for Lee, who is having a great Finals so far. For the record, possums become roadkill by just being slow, armadillos have a habit of jumping when frightened – to about the bumper height of a car – and squirrels will often cross half of the road and then turn back only to be hit, but Mike Lee is the only mammal that has become roadkill due to a cartwheel attempt.

The Round 5 Honorably Mentioned:

Cord McCoy on Crosswired:

Cord has a good chance to bump the two wonder boys off the top of this round. Crosswired stumbled in Round 2, but he is a great draw for guys with a lot of try because if you can weather the storm, he is liable to jump back under you if you get in trouble. Cord could steal a round win here.

Austin Meier on Far West:
These two met at a Challenger Tour event in Bastrop, Texas, for 89.5 points this season.

Aaron Roy on Mellow Yellow:
Aaron picked fourth in the draft here, and he chose a bull that is unridden in 13 PBR outs over several bulls that are better matchups statistically. Why? Who knows, but he did buck off this bull in San Antonio, so he must like something about him.

Beau Hill on Master Feeds Show Stopper:
This is probably the most unknown bull coming in to the Finals, but he is not unknown to Beau Hill. Beau spent a lot of time in Canada this season and has probably seen this bull go several times.

Ryan McConnel on Rowdy Houdlum:
A pretty sweet pick in this round and a great matchup for McConnel. May not be worth enough points to win the round on.

Cody Ford on Mac-Nett’s El Presidente:

They met in Billings for an 89.5 score.

McKennon Wimberly on Yellowjacket Jr.:
Yellowjacket Jr. has been ridden just once out of 24 times – by McKennon Wimberly in Nampa last April for 90.5 points. He also bucked Wimberly off at Billings – also in April.

The World Leaders:

Guilherme Marchi on Sting Machine:

Marchi continues to get bulls that are tough to ride. Sting Machine is unridden for his entire career so far.

The World Champion Bull Race:

Code Blue can all but lock it up here with a round win, but if he doesn’t win this round, and Voodoo Child, Big Tex, Bones, or Uncle Buck do win it, it will be too close to call going into the final round.

No one is disputing the caliber of riders who have made it here to the world finals. They would not be here if they were not the best in the world. To address the media and commentators reporting from Las Vegas excessively, which I have observed here in the blogs proves that the many are making observations that do not put this sport in a good light, that we as PBR fans are not accustom to seeing this kind of behavior out there so blatanly form the commentators. This is an "individualized" sport. To be fair, to be objective, to maintain perspective is imparative to all the riders as well as the fans. No one needs to create excitement, the excitement is already here! It is not trashing riders, it is bringing attention to the fact that the general public is not pleased with the bias reporting and would like to see the media, "the cowboys" maintain the spirit of what we have become to expect in giving recognition and credit due to all the riders individually. Those who have been loving bull riding, rodeo, for most of our lives have come to expect far better then we have seen not only here in Las Vegas but for most of this season. We do not want the sport to be diminshed to "a joke," we would like the comments to be impartial, to be fair, It is NOT the job of the media to turn this cl!@# "A" event into a circus of dissention. Yes, we all have our favorites and it's nice to see everyone rooting for their favorite riders, their favorite bulls, however, it is important that all the commentators of this event NOT out and out show the favoritism that they have to only one, they of all people should know this is NOT their job, quite the contrary. If they can't step it up and behave as a proffesional in their career, perhaps next season they need to steop down. This season as far as what goes on behind the cameras has been a great dissapointment. Perhaps, next season the PBR can step up their game with programming that is available and dependable to the many and go back to reporting from their cowboy roots and show some cl!@#, real grit and heart! To all the great cowboys who ride, that thrill us every season...thank you so very much, you are the best!

Silly fighting, back and forth, just enjoy this final and don't let the media run your mouths. We can do nothing to change the results of this event, just enjoy the bull riders for what they are facing, we know any one of them could be killed or put in a wheel chair for the rest of their lives which makes this fighting match quite silly, I love the PBR watch it every week, yes I have my favorits, I love Kody,JB, Bryan C and Bryan Mc and many others but the media people are going to do everything they can to cause friction between the fans and riders that is what they are paid to do, try and keep everyone on the edge and make it exciting. It is already exciting to me when they come out of the shut and can stay on the back of one of these bulls. Kody and JB both deserve to win,I wish them all the luck in the world. Doesn't matter who is first or second. They are awesome Bull Riders!!!!

I just read all the comments and right now with the Versus/Direct TV debacle, we cannot get the bull riding and I probably am better off with my year long frustration over JB Mauney. He is the Kyle Bush of bullriding. I agree with all the re-rides handed to him on a silver platter by the judges. I cannot believe they are so partial to a !@#$y kid who is so in love with himself. Pride is one thing and !@#$y is a very distasteful trait to protray. I am so hopeful Kody wins it all and that Marchi can come back strong and kick JB out of second. There is a rider (GM) who has been slighted in ratings on rides and re-ride options in my opinion. I have been looking for results on he internet and hope bullriding will opt out of its contract with Versus and go to another broadcast so we can see the broadcasts. Sorry I feel so strongly but at 66 years old and a sports nut from my youth on, I have seen a lot of injustices to certain sports figures. Certain ones of them need to protray a totally different personality.

Kody is a great rider, but then, so is JB and a host of others. I've been a JB fan for quite a while and hope he wins this year. I also enjoy watching Marchi and can't believe he has gone 0 for 5. Must be frustrating for him. I would like to say that even tho we all have our favorites, it isn't necessary to trash other riders and cry favoritism after each event. If, as some of you stated, JB is the judges favorite, then they would have scored him higher on Ricky Bobby so he would have come out on top. That didn't happen, did it?

I just watched Brian Canter nearly ride a rank one and then go throw his bull rope and hit the wall. Its just another reason why guys shouldn't act like little babies. That junk came from the days when you used to watch Tuff walk down the hall throwin stuff or cryin in the arena. Now the guys who used to watch and idolize him are pullin that junk.

JB is PBR love child,...They(pbr) are so blinded by JB, he's like a new born child, you know how a new born will be so cuddled, they forget that there are other 39 riders there too.

Go, Marchi. I'd be disheartened, too, with all the promotion of JB going on all over the place. I expect commentors, judges, etc. to be impartial. They are so blantantly in JB's corner, so to speak, that is has turned an exciting sport into a joke. If you are new to this sport, you'd never know there are other riders. I hope anyone wins but JB Mauney. If Marchi doesn't win, then go Kody!!

Actually, Valdiron de *Oliveira* is riding Pearl Snap, not Black Pearl, who was bucked last night. But I agree that Oliveira has looked really good in four rounds so far!

I agree with batkmom. Too much JB and he hasn't won anything yet. He hasn't been crowned champ and maybe never will be but he sure is getting the breaks. And then when fans complain we are called JB haters. That's not so. We just want fairness at all times. I thought Oliverio's ride was better than JBs. But Oliverio usually gets marked low. His behind is tight on that bull's back and the bull is bucking well and Oliverio is riding strait like Kostroh but doesn't get the scores. Jb bounces all over and gets good marks. Now they are predicting Oliverio for third because he is riding Black Pearl.
I still think the greatest is Marchi. GO MARCHI!!

Troubadour, I still think you should be crowned Bucking Bull of the Year! You are the "go-to" bull, when a cowboy needs the score to win. As much as I adore, yes adore, all of the great NC bulls, you should win this year, because you have the heart of a champion and are consistently responsible for making champions out of cowboys! Hopefully, Crosswired, you can keep your hindqtrs. upright tonight for Cord. I have forgiven you for letting down JB last Sunday. As much as I love, yes love, the cowboys (esp. JB), you bulls forever have my heart! Oh, and by the way, Ricky Bobby, I know you're a tough one, but together you and JB can take the round, so "just do it"!!!

I have been following the PBR since 1992. I have tried very hard to give great consideration to my choice of words and to be as objective as I possibly can be with this blog. I just could no longer sit back and even begin to call what you are doing good entertainment. With that being said...To the commentators, the cowboys, in particular TY Murray who I have followed throughout his riding career, with great p!@#ion it's time to Cowboy up! Step up and stop talking out of the side of your mouth, your bias towards one rider only is sad and shameful for all of the fans to observe. You talk about "real cowboys," "real gentlemen" thats the kind of reporting we need to start seeing from the PBR. This is not a popularity contest, you are doing the PBR and the fans a deservice on the back of all the cowboys who have provided us with thrilling performances and have demonstrated to old and new fans what great atheletes they are and what a great sport bull riding is! I would love to see PBR come full time to a major network and have even greater exposure. Ty, your commentary is so transparent, no matter what question is given to you about #1 Kody Lostroh that qulaifies him excluisevly with recognition and a positive comment, directed towards him only, you repeatedly throw in Mauney's name when acknowledgling Lostroh, how professional and skewed is that? Yes, this has been one of the most exciting finals in the history of PBR...but the commentary is so colored towards one bull rider only, no one really needs to listen to any of it more than once, they only need to record one episode, one morning lineup and they have it all. It sounds like a broken record and you can hear it in your voice more and more each and every day, trying to him and haw around it because you are not doing the job I expect that you were put there to do, instead you are showing how petty and jaded you can really be...so one more time hey guys, COWBOY UP!

I have noticed too that JB seems to be a favorite of the judges. I've seen several times this season where he has gotten a reride for the bull stumbling or hooking a horn in the chute gate, whereas i've seen a few other riders in the finals have the same thing happen and get a no score or a DQ when it clearly threw off their momentum.

I was also disappointed that Marchi bucked off. I was sure he would ride. For Marchi fans at the draft last night, Marchi was very gracious and had a great sense of humor about it all . . they said his wife said he needs to ride sheep.. he impressed me very much by his good attitde. Kuddos to Marchi!

I want to say that it is pretty poor of the judges
and commintators for the amount of points and re-
rides that mauney recieves when the next man never.
The commintators only ever want to talk about him
and never give much credit to lostroh that is sitting
number 1 in the world. I am sure that there are
alot of us that are tired of mauney being the only
rider that gets talked about. Last night you were
more worried about talking to mauney then the man
that is sitting first in the world and first for the
round. I agree that the points that mauney recieved
last night was an un fair score. Anyone else would
have only gotten 86 or 87 points. Think about the
    number 1 man more...............

Hey! judges are at it again,.. last night they gave Mauney 89 points,..to which Jdub say,"I disagree with score JB got, the bull bucked weak, and it should be 87",..Now looking at the DVR and sure I think Lostroh should have gotten 94.0 or more if the judges were looking at Lostroh's as they were at JB's,...

Poor ol Marchi. He's had heck drawing at these finals. I don't like to believe in slumps, but if there is such a thing, this is one. Kinda like drawin cold cards. He can ride, but he needs a duck right now, to get his confidence back.
