Breaking: Brown doctors out of Finals
Pulled groin takes toll; Robinson in as first alternate
LAS VEGAS (November 6, 2009) - Regardless of how it ended, Zack Brown says he’s had a great season.
“I’m disappointed,” said Brown, who after four rounds of trying to compete with a pulled groin has decided the best thing for him to do is “heal up and come back when I’m strong. It’s a [lousy] time to get hurt. It’s unfortunate.”
Brown was enjoying his best season on the Built Ford Tough Series since finishing 6th in the world standings in 2004.
The Santa Fe, Texas, resident came into the 2009 PBR World Finals ranked fourth in the standings, but after tough go of it in Las Vegas he’s slipped three spots and has yet to make the whistle.
It was a tough October for the 30-year-old.
In spite of winning the final BFTS event, his fourth win of the season, he separated his ribs in mid-October, then pulled a groin.
Brown has been in obvious pain following each out. In the opening round he gave an admirable attempt on Pearl Snap before coming down at 5.8 seconds. In the three subsequent rounds, he’s had virtually no leg strength to hold on, and has failed to even make it to the 2-second mark.
“I’m not riding the rest of the event,” said Brown, in a mid-morning phone conversation. “I just doctored out.”
He was at Thursday night’s bull draft and made the second-to-last selection. However, it will be Billy Robinson who will be welcomed to the Thomas & Mack Center with an opportunity to try his luck with Spit Fire later today.
Robinson was the first alternate. He’s followed on the waiting list by the 2008 Daisy Rookie of the Year Reese Cates, who said he does not expect get an opportunity any earlier than Round 6 on Saturday.
Cates said he spoke with Cody Ford, Brian Herman and Ednei Caminhas – all three of whom have been roughed up – and the trio indicated they all plan to compete in Round 5.
Ford, like Brown, is competing with a pulled groin. The Oregon native earned a score of 83.5 in the first round, but has had a tough time of things in the three rounds since.
Round 5 gets underway Friday night at 8 p.m. ET and can be seen live on Versus.
