‘One bull at a time’
\With history on the line, Lostroh accentuates the practical
LAS VEGAS (November 6, 2009) - Kody Lostroh’s plan for 2009 is as simple today as it was two days before the year even began.
“Just stay on more bulls,” he said in an interview back on December 29 of last year.
“That’s how (Guilherme Marchi) beat us so bad last year. He rode, what, 75 percent of his bulls and nobody came close to that. If a couple more of us could do that, then it could be a pretty tight race.”
That was prior to the Colorado cowboy securing the lead atop the world standings after the first four Built Ford Tough Series events. He then surrendered that lead to J.B. Mauney, the only other rider to have the lead, for a string of seven events before reclaiming first for an impressive final run of 20 events.
With four rounds remaining over the course of the next two-plus days, his approach is exactly the same as it was on that chilly December afternoon.
“Oh, just staying focused and taking it one weekend at a time,” he said then, “not worrying about nothing—one bull at a time.”
Last night, a few minutes before the start of the Round 5 bull draft, Lostroh echoed the same sentiment.
When asked what will it take win a title this year, he said, “Stay on my bulls.”
“I can’t control what any of them other guys do. I can’t control what the judges do. The only thing I can do is give it my all every time I get on, and I’ve been telling everybody that all year, and I’m sticking to it.”
That’s precisely what he’s done since arriving in Las Vegas.
He’s one of just three riders to have covered all four bulls at the 2009 PBR World Finals. J.B. Mauney and Valdiron de Oliveira are the other two. Mauney leads the Finals average with 358 points, and Lostroh and Oliveira are splitting second and third just 4.5 points back.
Lostroh had what he called “a crappy bull in the first round,” but he kept his focus, and with a few points each round he’s “been catching up and getting it done.”
In Round 1 he managed only 84 points on Red Kat, but followed up with 88.25, 91, and then a round winning 90.25 on Mission Accomplished. He used that round win to his advantage in selecting Troubadour with the first pick in the rank pen for Round 5.
“I just can’t pass him up,” said Lostroh, Thursday night. He’s not worried about previous rounds, much less Saturday or Sunday. Lostroh currently has a 480.50-point lead over Mauney in the world standings.
“I’m not worried about if it’s better than this or that. I’m just having fun and doing my job,” he continued. “I’m not worried about anything. I’m just doing my thing.”
In fact, the 24-year-old was so in the moment Thursday after winning Round 4 at the Thomas & Mack Center that he wasn’t even aware that Troubadour, a bull he won two events on this year, was even available in the draft.
“I make it a point not to look at them lists until it’s time,” Lostroh said, “and (Versus broadcaster Leah Garcia) asked about Troubadour and I felt like a bonehead. I didn’t even realize that he was there.”
He later added, “You get looking too far ahead and you forget that you gotta ride the one under you right now, so that’s what I think about and that’s what I do.”
Tomorrow morning is the draft for Round 6, followed by the event, and then the longest day of the Finals concludes with the draft for Sunday afternoon’s Round 7.
The eighth and final round will be predetermined with a random draw, featuring the 15 rankest bulls in the world, and presumably a world title riding on the last bull.
