Mauney wins Round 4 of World Finals, closes in on Pacheco

LAS VEGAS – J.B. Mauney, the reigning PBR World Champion knew he needed to deliver to stay in the hunt for a record-tying third world title and he came through, winning Round 4 of the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Built Ford Tough World Finals after a 90.25-point on Red Dawn (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve) Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena.

In what is the tightest points race in PBR history, the 2016 World Champion will not be decided until the final day as the Top 3 are still very much in the hunt.

The Mooresville, North Carolina, native recorded the first 90-point ride in the new home of the PBR World Finals and the 17th 90-point ride in his Finals career. More importantly, the 300 world points he earned pulled him within 544.08 points of current world leader Kaique Pacheco (Itatiba, Brazil).

Mauney also earned $30,000 for the round win making him the first bull rider to earn $7 million in career earnings.

World No. 2 Cooper Davis (Buna, Texas) rode Dead Calm (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve) for 83.75 points but did not earn any world points Saturday. He trails Pacheco by 226.58 points heading into championship Sunday.

Stetson Lawrence (Trenton, North Dakota) finished second in Round 4 courtesy of an 89-point ride on Texicali (J.A.R.S. Bucking Bulls/Gene Owen). Lawrence is now 2-for-4 and is currently 12th in the event.

2008 World Champion Guilherme Marchi (Leme, Brazil) continued his stellar World Finals performance by riding Acting Crazy (Martinez Bucking Bulls) for 88.75 points to finish third in Round 4. Marchi moved up to ninth in the world standings courtesy of the 125 world points he picked up Saturday night.

Gage Gay (Staley, North Carolina) and Joao Ricardo Vieira (Itatinga, Brazil) tied for fourth in Round 4 after dual 88.25-point rides. Gay rode Like a Boss (Rockin’ I Rodeo Company) while Vieira covered Bottoms Up (Selman & Terell LLC). The pair each earned 85 points toward the world standings. The points moved Vieira within 1996.58 points of Pacheco heading into the final day of competition.

Fresh on the high of his 3-for-4 performance so far at the Finals, Valdiron de Oliveira announced that this would be his last World Finals as the 11-year veteran has decided to retire after the event wraps on Sunday.

It will all come down to one day as the Top 40 bull riders in the world gather for one final time this season to settle some scores.

Each rider will face one more bull in Round 5 before the Top 15 move on to the Built Ford Tough Championship Round where the World Finals event winner and the 2016 PBR World Champion will be crowned.
