McCoy shares a travel tale in anticipation of tonight's 'Amazing Race'

By PBR

When it comes to riding in style, sometimes it’s all about who you know.

Back when Cord McCoy was attending college at Southwestern Oklahoma State, he stood out as a bareback rider, saddle bronc rider and, of course, a bull rider. He had already turned pro and was talking to a college buddy about a PBR event in Elk City.

“He said, ‘Well, that’s quite a coincidence, because I’m going to Elk City to a wedding,’” said McCoy. His pal wasn’t attending the wedding service, though. He worked for a limousine service that was providing transportation for the wedding party.

“We kind of got it all rigged up, and I throw my rigging bag in the limo,” said McCoy.

They made the hour-long drive west along I-40, and pulled up behind the chutes, where McCoy hopped out and grabbed his gear before his buddy headed off to the wedding.

McCoy rode a couple bulls and won the event.

“I never told any of the other bull riders he was just a friend of mine giving me a ride down the road,” laughed McCoy. “As soon as the bull riding was over, he had gotten done with the wedding and pulled back up there with a big stretch limo, so I threw my rigging bag back in there and took off again – never even told a soul I was just catching a ride with a buddy of mine.”

“They thought I went and rented a limo to come to the event,” he continued. “I guess having friends in lower places pays off.”

It was a big-time night for a big ride to the event.

“It would have been way worse to show up in a limo and fall off real quick,” McCoy said.

McCoy and his brother Jet are competing for the second time on the hit CBS series “The Amazing Race,” traveling around the world for the winner-take-all prize of $1 million. The latest episode airs tonight at 8 on CBS. Every Sunday, he recalls a travel story from his past for PBR.com.

McCoy’s entire interview can be heard here.
