PUEBLO, Colo. – In the words of Brennon Eldred, “Sometimes when ya mess with the bull, you end up getting the horn.”
The No. 21 bull rider in the world announced on Monday that he would undergo surgery on Tuesday after breaking his jaw attempting to ride Speed Demon at THE AMERICAN Sunday afternoon at AT&T Stadium.
Eldred was trying to remain in contention for the $1 million bonus, which Joao Ricardo Vieira went on to win a portion of, when Speed Demon jerked him down during the long round at the home of the Dallas Cowboys.
“My wrist was messed up from L.A., so I had them tape the crap out of it,” Eldred said. “My hand came out of my rope about the second jump and I ended up riding him about three more jumps with my tail. It finally blew and shot me straight up and I came down on his head with my jaw.”
Eldred said he is likely going to be out for six weeks.
“I’m definitely taking some time off,” Eldred said. “I’m pretty sore. They’ve got to put some plates in it and wire it shut. It is going to be a long six weeks.”
Eldred is 4-for-16 (21.05 percent) in eight Unleash The Beast events.
Eldred earned 160 of his 380 world points with a second-place finish at the Corpus Christi, Texas, Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour event and a third-place showing at the WCRA Windy City Roundup in Chicago.
Eldred leads No. 36 Ruger Piva by 122.5 points in the world standings.
Based on his timeline, Eldred’s first event back may be the Wrangler Long Live Cowboys Classic, presented by Cooper Tires, on April 27-28 in Columbus, Ohio.
The 24-year-old is hopeful he can come back sooner than six weeks, but that may be wishful thinking.
“We will see,” Eldred said. “I’ll have my jaw wired shut so I don’t know. Just have to see how I feel.”
