LONDON, Ont. – As a sold-out, record-setting crowd watched on Saturday night in London, Ontario, inside Canada Life Place, Dakota Buttar (Eatonia, Saskatchewan) showed up and showed out, going a perfect 3-for-3 to win the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Canada Cup Series’ London Classic, overtaking the No. 1 rank in the national standings.
Two-time PBR Canada Champion Buttar is chasing history this season. Should he win the 2025 Canadian Championship, and accompanying $100,000 bonus, he would tie Aaron Roy (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan) for most national titles held by one rider with three.
Buttar got off to a quick start in Round 1, delivering the top score when he covered Kryptonite (Vold Rodeo) for 88.5 points. The reserved veteran then remained atop the leaderboard following Round 2 when he outlasted Red Rust (Vold Rodeo) for 87.5 points.
With the first pick in the championship round bull draft, Buttar elected to go head-to-head with More or Less (Thompson Rodeo Livestock). A familiar opponent, Buttar had covered him in their previous two meetings, including in early February en route to his Cup Series win in Red Deer, Alberta, for 87 points.
Nodding with confidence, Buttar repeated his past success, dominating the bovine athlete for 89 points to clinch his second Cup Series win of the season.
Buttar earned a crucial 251 points for the victory. While he travelled to London 151 points behind No. 1 Jake Gardner (Fort St. John, British Columbia), Buttar overtook the lead in Canada, now 100 points ahead of No. 2 Gardner.
Gardner went an uncharacteristic 0-for-2 at the London Classic.
After being bucked off by Diggin Up Bones (Thompson Rodeo Livestock) in 2.84 points in Round 1, Gardner was tossed by Jammer (Vold Rodeo) in 3.69 seconds in Round 2.
Returning to the top of the event leaderboard, three-time PBR World Finals qualifier Koltin Hevalow (McAlester, Oklahoma) was second, earning 158 national points.
Hevalow, who rides for the Kansas City Outlaws in the separate PBR Teams league, topped Hat Trick (CJ Bucking Bulls) for 82 points in Round 1, Leader Of The Pack (Thompson Rodeo Livestock) for 87.5 points in Round 2, and Whoopsie Hustle (CJ Bucking Bulls) for 87 points in the championship round.
The silver showing in his 2025 Canadian debut allowed Hevalow to catapult from unranked to No. 10 in the national standings. He is now 417.17 points behind No. 1 Buttar.
Garrett Green (Meeting Creek, Alberta) was third.
Green punched his ticket to the championship round via an 83.5-point ride from Round 1 atop Red Rust, followed by an 84.5-point score from Round 2 on Times A Wasting (Thompson Rodeo Livestock).
In his final out inside Canada Life Place, Green punctuated his flawless performance by making the requisite 8 on MoBamba (Thompson Rodeo Livestock) for 87.5 points.
Green returned to Alberta having earned 134 national points. On the hunt for his first PBR Canada Championship this November, Green climbed from No. 9 to No. 5 in the national standings, inching within 304.67 points of No. 1 Buttar.
As the final rider to go a perfect 3-for-3, two-time PBR Canada Champion Cody Coverchuk (Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan) was fourth.
Coverchuk rode Great White (Black Creek Rodeo Company) for 82 points in Round 1, before conquering Kryptonite for 87 points in Round 2. After earning a re-ride in the championship round, Coverchuk delivered in his final out, outlasting I’m A Criminal (S&M Bucking Bulls) for 83 points.
Netting 97 national points, Coverchuk rose from No. 4 to No. 3 in Canada. He is now 229.17 back of the No. 1 rank.
Rounding out the Top 5 in fifth was Rafael Parra (Mandaguaçu, Brazil).
Parra finished third in Round 1, riding Stary Bucks (S&M Bucking Bulls) for 86 points, but was quickly humbled in Round 2 when he was bucked off by User Friendly (Thompson Rodeo Livestock) in a quick 3.6 seconds.
Rebounding in fast form, Parra concluded his time in London with an 87-point ride atop Smoke Bomb (Vold Rodeo/Brady Walker) in the championship round.
Parra’s efforts earned him 77 national points, elevating him from No. 16 to No. 11 in the standings. He is now 417.5 points behind No. 1 Buttar.
In the bull pen, Moonwalk (Thompson Rodeo Livestock) bucked supreme, crowned the YETI “Built for the Wild” Bull of the Event. Bucking in the championship round, Moonwalk was marked an unrivaled 45.5 points for his 5.87 seconds of work against Jordan Hansen (Amisk, Alberta).
The PBR Canada Cup Series will next travel to Ottawa, Ontario, and the Canadian Tire Centre for the PBR Ottawa Classic on Saturday, June 14. Action will get underway at 7 p.m. ET. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the Canadian Tire Centre Box Office and online at Ticketmaster.ca.
