READING, Penn. – Marcus Mast prevailed at PBR Reading to hold the event buckle up high Saturday night, covering two of his three bulls in Santander Arena after driving through the night to make it to Reading following travel issues.
Before getting on the rankest bulls in the world, Mast faced an insurmountable challenge: getting on an airplane. While preparing to arrive early for advance media, his flight was canceled due to severe weather sweeping across the nation, forcing him to drive 10 hours from South Bend, Ind., to southeastern Pennsylvania to make it to the event on time. Running on limited sleep and pure adrenaline, the 31-year-old cowboy bested Tags Friday night for a round-leading 87.50 points and Thriller for 83 points Saturday night to hold the first pick of the draft heading into the Championship Round.
The event champion bucked off Working Man in 2.52 seconds in the final out of the night, but his 170.50 total points were enough for the Reading win along with 124 points in the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour standings. Mast currently sits at 20th after not competing in his first event until mid-January.
Brody Robinson finished second, also covering two bulls throughout the weekend with an 80-point ride on Snake OilFriday night to sit in third. The 19-year-old up-and-coming rider then bested Blind Sided on Saturday to finish the weekend with an aggregate total of 160.40 points. Robinson owns the No. 15 position in the standings.
Eli Vastbinder came in third at the event with 85.50 points after being unable to climb on his Championship round bull due to injury. His ride aboard Dark Wind in the second round was the best in the round, helping him vault up in the event standings. Vastbinder sits at No. 52 in the Velocity tour standings.
Dener Barbosa challenged Blind Sided Saturday night and rode the full eight for 80.40 points to place him fourth on the weekend. Barbosa owns the No. 9 slot in the PWVT after Reading.
Closing out the top five was Vitor Losnake with an 84.60-point ride Friday night for the second-best score of the opening round. Losnake sits at 124th in the standings.
Leo was the high-marked bull of the event with a 43.60-point showing when he bucked off Wyatt Vineyard in 2.05 seconds.
The Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour picks back up with PBR Bakersfield in Bakersfield, California with a one-day event on March 14 at Dignity Health Arena.
