Key Storylines
The Rookie of the Year race is tightening by the ride, and what once looked like Marco Rizzo’s to lose has turned into a full-on dogfight. After bursting onto the scene as the early favorite, the New York Maverick now has Maverick Smith breathing down his neck — just 6 points back. With both riders continuing to trade punches week in and week out, the rookie race is quickly becoming one of the most electric storylines on tour.
And the stakes couldn’t be higher — this weekend marks the final regular-season event of the Monster Energy Team Challenge, with playoff scenarios officially on the line. Three teams — Kansas City, Florida and Nashville — are all vying for the final two spots, meaning every ride, every out, and every matchup could decide who punches their ticket and who gets left on the outside looking in. Fans can catch all the team action streaming live Friday night on Paramount+.
However, the Velocity Tour talent will look different this week. Macaulie Leather has been sidelined after suffering a broken jaw in a brutal, early chute incident at Florida State — a tough break for the rising standout just as he was gaining traction. With Leather temporarily out, the door swings open for new faces to step in and prove they belong under the bright lights. Keep an eye on which riders seize that opportunity.
On the animal athlete side, the bull standings are as wide open as they’ve been all season. Man Hater still holds the top spot for now, but challengers are closing in, and it feels like only a matter of time before a new No. 1 emerges atop the pen.
Meanwhile, the world title race took another dramatic turn in Tallahassee. John Crimber reclaimed the No. 1 ranking after a statement performance, leapfrogging veteran Sage Steele Kimzey as the two continue to go blow-for-blow at the top. With neither rider giving an inch, Indianapolis becomes the next chapter in what’s shaping up to be a heavyweight battle for the gold buckle.
