Key Storylines

Injuries continue to shake up the field at a critical point in the season, creating a wave of opportunity as the final three-day event of the regular season arrives in Sioux Falls. A long list of riders will be sidelined this weekend, including Jose Vitor Leme, Leandro Zampollo, Dalton Kasel, Clay Guiton, Andrew Alvidrez, Callum Miller, Felipe Furlan, Hudson Bolton, Kade Madsen, Trace Redd, Austin Richardson and Ezekiel Mitchell, while Keyshawn Whitehorse is excused, opting to be home this weekend to shine the spotlight on a different Whitehorse — his brother.

Amid the reshuffled field, Jess Lockwood returns to competition after weeks in concussion protocol. The two-time World Champion, fresh off a new chapter personally as a newlywed, steps back into the draw looking to regain momentum at a pivotal point in the season.

With so many top names out, the door swings wide open for a new wave of contenders. Several riders have earned their shot, including Velocity Tour standouts Macaulie Leather and Dener Barbosa, along with Fresno event winner Zane Cook. Leather’s return carries added grit, as he makes his way back after suffering a brutal jaw injury in Tallahassee—breaking it in half and walking to the locker room trailing blood—now back in the draw with Australian vengeance. A deep list of alternates — including Mason Taylor, Alex Junior da Silva, Mauricio Moreira, Andy Guzman, JaCauy Hale, Elijah Jennings and Romario Leite — are set to step into the spotlight.

One of the most intriguing storylines belongs to Mason Taylor, who returns to a venue where he has already made his mark. The veteran notched his first career UTB win in Sioux Falls in 2019 and later claimed the 2020 Velocity Tour Finals title in the same building, making this a familiar proving ground as he looks to capitalize on another opportunity.

As always, Sioux Falls brings the bull power. The opening round is loaded with some of the rankest bovine athletes in the sport, including Ransom, Pegasus, Buck Nasty, Red Demon and Freedom Fighter, with many expected to return for Championship Sunday. The short round is already shaping up to feature elite matchups with Fire Zone, Magic Potion and Eyes on Me, setting the stage for a high-scoring weekend.

Those matchups won’t come easy. Several headline showdowns have yet to result in a qualified ride, including a highly anticipated third meeting between Brady Fielder and Ransom — a rivalry that has already tested the Australian’s gumption earlier this season.

Beyond the weekend itself, several milestones are within reach as the sport’s top riders continue to climb the record books. Kaique Pacheco sits one round win away from tying Chris Shivers for third all time, while veterans João Ricardo Vieiraand Eduardo Aparecido continue their march toward 500 career rides.

With a stacked draw, surging alternates, and history on the line, Sioux Falls sets the stage for a weekend where anything can happen — and likely will.
