Key Storylines
The concrete jungle is calling, and with just six games remaining in the regular season, the New York Mavericks have more than hometown pride on the line.
New York returns to UBS Arena for Go Bowling Maverick Days looking to climb out of eighth place and overtake the Kansas City Outlaws for the No. 7 seed. The stakes are simple: Finish seventh and avoid the opening play-in game at the PBR Teams Championship in Las Vegas.
But the Mavericks have another piece of business to handle Saturday night.
New York and the Florida Freedom renew their rivalry with the belt on the line in the concrete jungle. With a hometown crowd behind them, the Mavericks will look to defend their turf against a Florida team that has been busy making changes ahead of the final stretch.
The Freedom recently acquired Luciano de Castro from the Arizona Ridge Riders in exchange for Alex Cerqueira, bringing a familiar face back into the fold for Florida head coach Paulo Crimber.
Crimber has been trying to bring Castro onto his roster since leaving Arizona years ago, and the timing may finally be right. Castro arrived at Florida's practice this week looking like the same old Luciano that Crimber has wanted all along. Now, the question is whether that version of Castro can deliver when the gate cracks open.
Florida's roster shakeup doesn't stop there. Boudreaux Campbell announced his PBR retirement effective immediately, while the Freedom added Elijah Jennings to their reserve roster as an unrestricted free agent. Jennings arrives with momentum after claiming the PBR RAM Challenger Series event title in Fort Wayne, Indiana, giving Florida another potential weapon as the team prepares for the final stretch of the regular season.
For Arizona, the trade brings Cerqueira into the Ridge Riders' lineup just days after the team completed a perfect 3-0 homestand in Glendale. The Ridge Riders will look to keep that momentum rolling as they head east for the final two regular-season stops.
While the battle for postseason positioning continues throughout the standings, the Missouri Thunder have an opportunity to put the regular-season title on ice this weekend.
Missouri enters Maverick Days sitting four games ahead of Austin, Nashville and Carolina with just six games remaining. After sweeping Ridge Rider Days in Glendale, the Thunder have put themselves firmly in the driver's seat and could clinch the No. 1 seed and regular-season title in New York. With the competition running out of time to close the gap, Missouri has a chance to lock up the top spot before the season's final stop in Kansas City.
Meanwhile, the Austin Gamblers have added another potential weapon to their reserve roster.
Grayson Cole signed with Austin as an unrestricted free agent, giving the Gamblers another option as they fight for postseason positioning. With Austin entering the weekend tied with Nashville and Carolina behind the league-leading Missouri Thunder, every available rider could prove valuable down the stretch.
The Oklahoma Wildcatters are also continuing to make moves under head coach Shawn Ramirez, signing Natanael Serra Aires to their reserve roster as an unrestricted free agent.
Oklahoma showed signs of life in Glendale with its highest-scoring performance of the season, going 4-for-5 for 352.80 points against Florida. Brock Poulin led the charge with his first career 90-point ride, earning 91.90 points aboard The Paint.
However, the Wildcatters will have to navigate Maverick Days without Poulin, Kase Hitt and Cort McFadden, adding another challenge for a team trying to build momentum before Las Vegas.
McFadden is still not ready to return after undergoing double groin surgery, while Hitt has been battling broken ribs since taking a shot to the chest in Ridgedale, Missouri. The injury was recently aggravated, leaving head coach Ramirez doing everything in his power to protect his rider from further damage.
That means keeping Hitt safe from not only more hits — no pun intended — but also his own hardheaded stubbornness. With Hitt eager to compete despite the injury, Ramirez is tasked with making sure his rider's determination doesn't get the better of him as the Wildcatters approach the postseason.
And while Missouri continues to control the top of the standings, the individual MVP battle remains anything but settled.
Three-time PBR World Champion Jose Vitor Leme continues to lead the race, with Missouri's Paulo Eduardo Rossetto refusing to let him get too comfortable. Leme also sits just one 90-point ride away from tying Chris Shivers' Premier Series record of 94.
With New York fighting to escape the play-in game, a rivalry belt up for grabs, new faces arriving on rosters and the postseason picture still shifting, Maverick Days promises plenty of fireworks before the road leads to Las Vegas.
